Floodwaters in Australia’s Alice Springs Prompt Multiple Rescues
Severe thunderstorms on Wednesday caused a sudden surge in water levels, submerging several roads and all low-lying causeways in the central Australian town. Authorities have since downgraded the emergency warning but continue to urge residents to avoid floodwaters.
Although river levels are gradually falling, officials warned that the waters still carry strong currents and pose a risk. Northern Territory Police confirmed that emergency crews conducted multiple rescues, including one incident involving a woman swept off a road.
Government schools will remain open to support emergency service personnel and essential workers, while other families have been advised to keep children at home, the Department of Education said.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole noted that the flooding was exacerbated by the Todd River—normally dry—already flowing before the heavy overnight rain. “There's no blame to be placed here on anybody, there was not a lot of warning,” he said.
The flooding follows recent extreme water levels elsewhere in the territory, including the Daly River, which reached a 14-meter major flood level earlier this week, forcing evacuations.
